F1 on most Ideal boilers is the low water pressure code. The heating system has lost enough water that the boiler will not run. It is the most fixable code on the list.

Check the pressure gauge. Top up using the filling loop the way your manual shows, then reset. If it comes back within days, water is escaping somewhere and the leak is the real job.

Coventry has many 1950s and 1960s homes in Tile Hill, Wood End and Canley with their original pipework. Joints and valves in those systems loosen with age. A slow weep is a common cause of F1.

What's involved

Our Ideal F1 Fault Code in Coventry

What the gauge should say

Cold, most Ideal boilers want around one bar. Your manual and the label inside the case give the exact figure.

Filling loop, gently

Open the loop slowly, watch the gauge, and close it fully at the right pressure. Rushing it overshoots, and too much pressure causes its own problems.

Radiators you bled recently

Bleeding radiators lets water out with the air. One top-up after bleeding is expected and is not a fault.

If it will not hold

The cause may be a leak under a floor, a weeping valve or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Found once, fixed once.

How the engineer tracks it down

They note the pressure, check the vessel, then inspect each radiator valve and joint. A leak that only shows when the heating is hot may need a second look once the system warms.

What to send us

A photo of the gauge, and one of anywhere you have seen water or a damp stain. Tell us how often it drops. That tells us whether it is a slow leak or a fast one.

Good to know

Ideal F1 Fault Code questions

Is F1 dangerous?

No. The boiler will not run on low pressure, which is the safe outcome. Smell gas? Leave the house, do not use switches, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. A fault code is never a gas leak, but a smell always is.

There is a dripping pipe outside.

That is usually the pressure relief valve or the expansion vessel. It is worth booking in rather than topping up indefinitely.

Can I keep topping it up?

You can, but each refill brings fresh oxygenated water into the system. Over time that feeds corrosion and sludge.

What affects the cost of fixing F1?

The cause. A recharged vessel is quick. A leaking joint beneath a floor takes longer. We aim to name the cause before you commit to anything.
