F28 on a Vaillant ecoTEC means the boiler tried to light several times and failed, so it has locked out. The first suspect is always the gas supply. Check the hob and a prepayment meter.
In winter, a frozen condensate pipe is the next suspect. If both are fine, the fault is inside the boiler. That points to the ignition electrode, the gas valve or the flue.
The related code F29 means the flame went out while running. Check your manual for your exact model. Coventry has plenty of ecoTEC boilers in newer homes around Binley and Allesley, where the condensate run is often long and exposed.
No gas at the hob means no gas at the boiler. Prepayment meter credit is the cheapest fix there is.
Frozen condensate stops an ecoTEC dead. Warm water along the outside pipe, then one reset.
F28 means it never managed to light. F29 means it lit, then lost the flame. They share causes but point an engineer in slightly different directions.
Gas pressure, the electrode and its gap, the gas valve and the flue. It is rarely a reason to replace the boiler.
The engineer checks the supply, then runs the ignition and watches what fails. Cleaning or replacing the electrode is common. Allow one to two hours.
A photo of the display and the label. Tell us whether the boiler works after a reset and for how long. Mention any condensate pipe that runs outside.
No. The lockout is the boiler protecting itself. Smell gas? Leave the house, do not use switches, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. A fault code is never a gas leak, but a smell always is.
That usually means a worn electrode or a marginal gas supply. It is a small repair, best done before it stops completely.
Ask for the Gas Safe ID card and read the back, which lists what they are signed off to work on.
The part and the access. An electrode is simple. A gas valve or a fan is more involved. The cause is confirmed first, then the cost is explained.
