EA, often shown as EA 227, is the most common Worcester Bosch code in Coventry. On most current models it means the boiler tried to light, the flame sensor saw nothing, and it locked out to stay safe.
The cause is usually outside the boiler first. Gas may not be reaching it. Inside the boiler, the usual suspects are an ignition electrode, a sensor or a gas valve. Check your manual, as meanings can shift between models.
Many Coventry boilers are fitted in a kitchen cupboard or a loft, so the condensate pipe often runs a long way outside. In a cold spell that pipe is a common reason for this code.
Try the hob or gas fire. If nothing lights anywhere, the problem is the supply, not the boiler. On a prepayment meter, check it has credit. An empty meter produces exactly this code.
In a cold snap, the white plastic pipe running outside can freeze and block the boiler. Warm water poured along it often clears it. Use warm water, never boiling. Then reset once.
Press reset once. If EA returns straight away, leave it off. Repeated attempts on a boiler that cannot light do it no good.
Gas pressure at the valve, the ignition electrode and its lead, the flame sensor, and the flue. Usually this is a part-level repair rather than a new boiler.
The engineer reads the code, then tests the gas supply and the ignition in order. The boiler is run through a full cycle before they leave, so you know it fires properly. Most visits take one to two hours.
A photo of the display, the boiler model, and a line on when it started. Tell us if the hob works and whether you are on a prepayment meter. Both answers save time on the day.
No. The boiler has shut itself down because it could not confirm a flame. Smell gas? Leave the house, do not use switches, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. A fault code is never a gas leak, but a smell always is.
That points at the condensate pipe freezing. Lagging or re-routing the outside run usually stops it for good.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card and check the back. It lists what that person is signed off to work on. Anyone genuine expects to be asked.
The part that has failed and how hard it is to reach. A frozen pipe costs far less than a gas valve. The code and your photos let us explain the likely range before we visit.
